Originally released in 1886, this is the original potato-leafed strain yielding 6-inch diameter fruit weighing as much as 1 1/2 to 2 pounds. Best for slicing- or county fair competitions! According to an 1887 advertisement from Rice’s Box of Choice Vegetables, it was bred in Iowa - and was "unequaled in fine flavor". Also known as Turner's Hybrid. The original name came from the Gilbert and Sullivan operetta which first played in London in 1885 and in New York in Februrary of 1886. We at Roughwood are proud to be the original source for this very rare, sought after variety!
